  • Worked in the Sedivy Research Lab in the molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry department as a graduate-level research intern on a project with the goal of further elucidating the interactions between reactive oxygen species and telomere dysfunction in cellular senescence.  Presented research findings as a power point at the leadership alliance national research conference in Washington, D.C.  Publication of research pending.

2002-2005       San Jose State University   San Jose, Ca - Undergraduate Research -  Genetics

  • Worked under Dr. Jeff Honda as a research intern on a project aimed at gene sequencing insects of the Tachinidae family.  Duties included harvesting mitochondrial DNA, homogenization, polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

2002    UCSF Medical School          San Francisco, Ca - Research Internship – Division of General Internal Medicine

  • Selected as the 2002 research intern for Redes en Accion – a cancer research project focused on Latinos.  Participated in research ¼ time on campus, and ¾ time at San Francisco General Hospital.  Helped in development and modification of research protocols, participated in testing, data gathering, and data recording.  Assisted Dr. Kevin Grumbach and Dr. Dean Schillinger in the S.E.E.C. study to explore disparities in obtaining medical care among ethnic groups and social classes.

2001-2002       Stanford University Medical Research Facility Palo Alto, Ca - Research Internship-  Non-Hodgkin’s   Lymphoma

  • Worked under Dr. Karl Kingsley, Ph. D. as a research intern on research related to the gene sequencing and identification of a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Interpreted and analyzed original gene sequence data and helped identify several protein binding sites involved in the pathology.

  • Worked on several public health programs such as lead poisoning, asthma, and child safety.  Duties included gathering field data, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and public education.

  • Recipient of N.I.H. research grant to participate in the M.A.R.C. undergraduate research program – a full scholarship and stipend for students who demonstrate superior academic merit and are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees in science and research careers.   Duties included participating in undergraduate research 10-20 hours per week in addition to required coursework.
